“It’s Just a Joke!”: How to Stop School Bullying and Restore Teacher Authority

6th graders, an informal leader acting as an inciter, an isolated child, and parents defending their child’s mocks with “he’s just the life of the party”. A familiar scenario for many educators?

When a teacher attempts to resolve conflict through team-building activities or calling parents without firm boundaries, bullying often intensifies, leaving the teacher feeling helpless and guilty.

📌 KEY STEPS TO OVERCOME CLASSROOM BULLYING:

1️⃣ Call things by their real names. If a “joke” is systematic, targets a specific child, and causes pain, it is not humor; it is bullying.

2️⃣ Establish a leading position. The classroom is the teacher’s domain. Safety rules are set by the educator, not the informal student leader.

3️⃣ Counter parental gaslighting. When speaking with the aggressor’s parents, stick strictly to facts and school rule violations rather than accepting excuses like “he’s just playful”.

4️⃣ Involve administration and specialists. Do not carry this burden alone. Document instances and engage the school psychologist and leadership team.

5️⃣ Work with the bystanders. An aggressor relies on an encouraging audience. Shifting the broader class dynamic strips the bully of their status.

A healthy classroom environment starts with clear, safe boundaries established by adults.
